Bible-Verse Meditations

A Bible verse can become more than something we read. It can become a place where we remain.

Bible-verse meditation slows the movement from reading to interpretation. We allow the language to settle before deciding what we think about it.

The aim is not repetition for its own sake. It is attention.

Choose a Verse

Begin with a verse or short passage that can be held without strain. Psalms, sayings of Jesus and brief lines from the letters often work well.

You may choose a verse because it comforts you, unsettles you or continues returning to your attention.

Read the Verse Slowly

Read aloud if you can. Listen to the sound and rhythm of the words. Pause, then read again.

Notice the word or phrase that seems most alive. Let the rest of the passage remain around it.

Meditate with the Words

Repeat the phrase gently with the breath. You might speak part of it while inhaling and the remainder while exhaling.

Do not force a meaning. Notice memories, emotions, questions and resistance as they arise.

Allow Silence

Eventually, release the words and remain in silence. The verse does not disappear; it becomes the doorway through which you entered.

If your attention wanders, return to the phrase without judgment.

Carry the Verse with You

Write the verse somewhere you will encounter it later. Return to it while walking, waiting or preparing to sleep.

The meditation continues when the words begin to accompany ordinary life.
